Chemistry Tutorials

The following chemistry tutorials have been written using Microsoft PowerPoint® .  These chemistry tutorials come on compact disc and include the Microsoft PowerPoint® viewer called Pack-and-Go® (PNG) for PCs that do not have Microsoft PowerPoint® installed. The PNG feature enables viewing of  Power Point® presentations on any PC computer. The chemistry tutorials may be printed out to use as handouts, overhead transparencies, or any combination.  PowerPoint® presentations make excellent tools for tutoring.

    Writing Chemical Formulas

This program is excellent for use as a class-room introduction or a chemistry tutorial for individuals for learning how to write the correct empirical chemical formula for a pure substance. Students have used this program successfully at both the high school and college level.

This presentation uses examples to
define: element, symbol, compound, monatomic, diatomic, diatomic element formula, empirical formula,  binary compound.  It displays a periodic table showing the location of metals and nonmetals. Using a  second periodic table it shows the common oxidation numbers of element
s in the family groups.  The rules for writing a pure binary compound are modeled with animated examples. This is followed by summary. (Number of frame pages 27)

Limiting Reactant Problems

An outline presentation of 12 frame pages that includes identifying limiting reactant problems, defining terms, and the steps for solving a problem using an example with nitrogen and oxygen.

Solutions and Stoichiometry

This presentation includes 29 frame pages which includes the following concepts:

  1. A description of the process of dissolving

  2. An explanation of  why certain components dissolve in water

  3. The definition of qualitative terms associated with the concentration of a solution

  4. The definition of the concentration term mass percent

  5. Examples of how to calculate mass percent

  6. The definition of molarity

  7. The use of molarity to calculate the number of moles of solute present

  8. Examples of how to calculate the concentration of a solution by diluting a stock solution

  9. A description of the strategy for solving stoichiometric problems for solution reactions

  10. Examples of how to do calculations involved in acid-base reactions

  11. An explanation of normality and equivalent weight

  12. The use the above concepts in stoichiometric calculations

What is Stoichiometry?

A presentation of 10 frame pages which defines stoichiometry and illustrates problems for the calculation of the number of grams and molecules in a substance. Includes an example of how to balance an equation and identify the type of reaction.  The hero of the scenario can be personalized with the name of your favorite student.  Excellent for introducing the acetylene stoichiometry rocket demonstration.
